Community-Led Prevention of Irregular Migration Among Youth in Somalia

Community-Led Prevention of Irregular Migration Among Youth in Somalia

Through Media Awareness and Community Engagement

May 15 – September 15, 2026 | Sponsored by SWRO*

Overview

In a region where economic hardship, conflict, and climate stress push thousands of young people toward dangerous migration routes, the Social Women and Resilience Organization (SWRO) took a decisive stand. Through its self-funded initiative  Community-Led Prevention of Irregular Migration Among Youth in Somalia SWRO brought together community members, religious leaders, women, and youth in Afmadow, Lower Juba Region, to confront one of the most urgent protection crises facing Somali families today.

The program runs from May 15 to September 15, 2026, combining structured community dialogues, media awareness campaigns, and grassroots engagement to equip communities with the knowledge, tools, and platforms they need to protect their youth.

The Problem We Are Addressing

Irregular migration claims lives. Young Somalis, driven by desperation and misinformation, undertake perilous journeys through Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, and the Mediterranean routes controlled by smugglers, marked by exploitation, and often ending in death, detention, or trafficking.

Yet the decision to migrate is rarely made in isolation. It is shaped by community narratives, peer pressure, misinformation about opportunities abroad, and a lack of viable alternatives at home. That is precisely where SWRO intervenes  at the community level, before the journey begins.

Our Approach

SWRO’s model is community-led by design. Rather than delivering top-down messaging, we convene community stakeholders elders, women leaders, youth, religious figures, and local authorities around a shared table to co-create awareness and accountability.

Key program components include:

Community Dialogue Sessions Facilitated roundtable discussions that create safe spaces for youth to voice their aspirations and understand the real risks of irregular migration routes

Media Awareness Campaign Broadcast and community radio messaging targeting youth and families across Lower Juba with accurate, life-saving information

Dedicated Hotline (2612) A direct access point for youth and families seeking information, guidance, or protection referrals

Engagement of Influencers  Religious leaders, elders, and women community leaders trained as frontline messengers within their own networks.
