Uniting Through Sport: SWRO’s Youth4Peace Football Tournament

Sport has long been one of humanity’s most powerful languages and in Afmadow, it is becoming a language of peace.

From April to May 2026, the Social Women and Resilience Organization (SWRO) brought together internally displaced and host community youth in a landmark football tournament under its Youth4Peace Sports Peacebuilding Initiative. Twelve teams competed across the weeks-long event, transforming the pitch into a space where divided communities shared goals, sweat, and solidarity.

The initiative was more than competition. It was a deliberate, structured response to one of the most persistent barriers to community cohesion in Lower Juba  the social distance between displaced populations and host communities. By competing side by side, young people built trust, mutual respect, and friendships that no policy document alone can generate.

The winning team was recognized with a championship trophy and sports materials, honouring both their performance and their role as ambassadors of peaceful coexistence.

SWRO believes that lasting peace is built from the ground up by young people who choose connection over division. This tournament is proof that when youth are given the right platform, they lead the way
